Time Management for Straight-A Students

Effective time management is critical while you're in college, and it's a trait that will help you long after your time in school is finished. Learn some of the secrets shared by many straight-A students.

Organize, Prioritize and Plan

At the beginning of each semester, use a time tracker that works for you, such as a calendar or planner, to schedule time blocks for each course. When classes start, take a moment to review each course syllabus to make note of assignment due dates or exams. To plan your time effectively, at the end of each week, look ahead to the next; do the same thing at the end of each month. In addition, instead of generalizing tasks, specify them - indicate specific lengths of study time, the number of chapters to read or subject-specific assignments to finish. Consider creating realistic daily and weekly to-do lists, numbering tasks in order of importance.

Some tools that you can use to keep track of your responsibilities include:

  • Index cards
  • Notepads
  • Laptops
  • Cell phones
  • Computer tablets

Avoid Procrastination

Don't put off your assignments or study time. A 2002 Ohio State University study of more than 100 students in a deadline-driven course found that those who most often postponed their scholarly duties earned a grade of 2.9 on a 4.0 scale. In contrast, the least frequent procrastinators earned a grade of 3.6. The research report also showed that extreme procrastinators were much more likely to rationalize their behavior.

Ask for Help When You Need It

If you're having an unusually difficult time understanding a concept, consider visiting your on-campus tutoring lab. You can also approach your professor after class and ask for assistance. Another option is to start or join a study group with other classmates. If you're having trouble with time management, think about visiting your career services office or student services department, which may offer complimentary advice or clinics on the subject.

Leave Time for Fun and Rest

In order for most straight-A students to remain efficient and stress-free, they have to make room for down time. This can be different for each student and may include napping, watching a movie, going out with friends, exercising or volunteering. If you're always on the go and find it hard to relax, consider blocking off time every week to recoup from the responsibilities associated with school.
