The Report and Its Findings

On June 1, 2011, The Pew Research Center's Pew Internet and American Life Project released 'Twitter Update 2011,' which surveyed 2,277 adults 18 or older throughout the United States. It found that, of all adults who use the Internet, 13% were using Twitter as of May 2011. When the same issue was investigated by the project in November 2010, eight percent of online adults were on Twitter. The report also found that 54% of these users access Twitter with their cell phones.

Additionally, the report examined exactly who is using Twitter. Those 18 to 29 years old had the most users, with 18% of Internet users in that age group using Twitter. Of Internet users 30 to 49, 14% use Twitter. Eight percent of 50 to 64 year olds and six percent of adults 65 or older are also on Twitter.

'Twitter Update 2011' also looked at how likely people with various levels of education are to use Twitter. Eight percent of high school graduates access Twitter. The numbers begin to increase with further education. Of those with some college 12% use Twitter while 16% those with a college degree or further education use the site.

Increased Popularity

Since Twitter was first founded in 2007, it has been catching on with people all over the world and is now used by millions. Internet users have grown more comfortable with Twitter and many now rely on it to get information and news updates. Some now join out of curiosity to see what all of the buzz is about, while others create accounts out of necessity. For instance, some college professors use Twitter in their classes, meaning students who aren't already on Twitter will be forced to sign up.

Growth For the Future

Just as the number of Twitter users increased from November of 2010 to May of 2011, they are sure to continue to rise. Social media and networking have increasingly become an important and much used tool in today's world. Those who aren't already on Twitter will surely realize they are missing out and will give in, particularly as the reputation of Twitter grows even stronger.

Social media is also used more in the classroom. Can Twitter increase student performance?
