How Do Online Programs Work?

In some instances, students are able to complete their program fully online. However, many of these schools have specific technical requirements such as a computer with sufficient memory and processing capability. You'll probably be asked to purchase required software applications as well. Course content may be delivered through streaming video lectures and traditional textbooks. You'll submit assignments online and interact with students as well as professors in virtual discussion forums.

What Will My Curriculum Be Like?

Undergraduate certificate programs will teach you the basics of computer graphics, computer programming and web development. Graduate certificate programs are usually designed for students with a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field; these programs examine topics like game testing techniques, artificial intelligence, algorithms and gaming applications for hand-held devices.

In an associate's program, you'll study character modeling, 2-D drawing and 3-D design. You'll learn some programming languages, such as C++, C# and JavaScript. You'll also become familiar with game design software applications, like Microsoft Visual Basic, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effects and Microsoft DirectX.

Similar to associate's programs, bachelor's programs often include training in popular programming languages and game design software. Additional coursework could include rendering, simulation, data modeling, monster creation and character development. Some bachelor's programs also explore business topics like quality assurance, marketing, budgeting, contracts and software project management.

In a game design and development master's program, you'll take courses like game architecture, physics in game development and advanced game engine programming. Most master's programs require completion of a thesis or final project in order to graduate.
