What Are E-Learning Courses?

E-learning courses are classes that are taught via the internet. E-learning uses technologies such as video and voice conferencing, virtual classrooms and bulletin boards. Read on to learn about types of e-learning available.

Overview of E-Learning Courses

E-learning, or electronic learning, is a term used to describe the process of taking courses or studying material via an electronic learning environment or content delivery system. Typically, e-learning courses and materials are sentr to students via the internet. E-learning courses are distributed in a variety of ways. The courses are typically self-paced, and students work on them according to their time schedule. A student can log onto an e-learning site at any hour of the day, making it especially beneficial to people with jobs or who are raising small children. The two types of the learning are asynchronous e-learning and synchronous e-learning.

Asynchronous Options

Asynchronous e-learning allows people to learn at any time. This is accomplished through self-paced courses, which can be delivered in a number of ways, such as the internet or DVDs. Students also learn through discussion groups that allow them to interact with other students in bulletin board or chat room environments.

Synchronous Options

In today's technological environment, synchronous e-learning allows teachers to conduct classes over the internet, giving students the ability to interact with peers, teachers, and other experts. This is accomplished through use of virtual classrooms or audio and video conferencing. For these courses, students must log onto the learning platform at a regularly scheduled time to participate in the class session.

The Open CourseWare Project

In recent years, many higher education institutions have begun to offer online courses to the general public without charge. These courses can vary in topics, such as engineering courses that are offered by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (www.ocw.mit.edu). Although these courses are free and often include video or audio lectures and some course reading material, college credit is not earned and the student does not have access to faculty or professors.
