Universities with Medical Transcription Programs

The following well-known university profiles offer two examples of medical transcription programs available through 4-year schools.

University of California - Riverside (UCR)

One of the ten universities that make up the University of California system, UCR Extension offers a Medical Transcription Editor: Online Professional Study program. While enrolled, students build a medical vocabulary, study basic English grammar and punctuation, understand body systems and diseases and develop transcription skills for various types of medical specialties.

North Carolina State University

Ranked by U.S. News and World Report in the top 100 national universities in the U.S., North Carolina State University also offers an online medical transcription program. This program teaches skills essential to medical transcription, including proofreading and editing. This program also offers interactive audio-based transcription exercises that replicate real-life situations in the field.

Community College Medical Transcription Programs

Many vocational schools and community colleges offer medical transcription certificate and diploma programs. Like the 4-year university programs, many of these allow for online study.

Everett Community College

About 20,000 students enroll in Everett Community College each year. The school offers an online certificate in medical transcription and editing. This 43-credit program can be taken full- or part-time. Students will not only learn about medical terminology, medical records, anatomy and speech recognition, they develop editing and proofreading skills as well. The program is approved by the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI).

Arapahoe Community College

Arapahoe Community College is known as Denver's first community college, opening in 1965. Its three campuses now serve about 18,000 students. The college offers a medical transcription program that is presented fully online. Students will learn the skills needed to transcribe clinical notes, diagnostic reports and recordings in medical specialties. Courses in basic and advanced acute care, medical language, keyboarding and disease processes are also taken. This program is also AHDI-approved.
