Lab technician courses generally fall into 2 categories; general and occupational. Degree programs in this field prepares students for technician positions in highly complex labs and related industries. Schools may offer these clinical laboratory technology programs as Associate in Applied Science degree programs or Associate of Science programs, and they're often use a phrase like 'medical laboratory technology' in the program title. Graduates have the knowledge and skills to apply for a certificate. Students are not required to pass an external certification or license exam to receive these degrees, although earning certification or licensure may be required for employment.

Lab technician students take at least two semesters of anatomy and physiology, which focus on developing a systematic perspective of anatomical structures and physiological processes. Students are also required to take a mathematics course and either a technical communications course or public speaking course. The remaining general core courses cover:
