University of Georgia

Founded in 1785, the University of Georgia (UGA) in Athens is the country's oldest public university. U.S. News & World Report ranked UGA 61th among national universities and 21th among public schools in 2015. In fall 2012, there were more than 34,000 students at UGA. The 614-acre grounds are spotted with historic buildings, and the on-campus Georgia Museum of Natural History holds one of the state's most extensive collections. UGA also is home to several varsity athletic programs and an active Greek community, including 17 sororities and 26 fraternities.

University of Florida

The University of Florida's (UF) 2,000-acre Gainesville campus was was ranked 47th among national universities and 14th among public schools by U.S. News & World Report in 2015. On the graduate level, UF's business, education and engineering schools all ranked in the top 50, and its online bachelor's and graduate business programs were among the nation's top 5. UF hosts an active athletic program that's won more than 26 team championships, and U.S. News reports that approximately 15% of UF students are involved with fraternities or sororities.

University of Texas

The University of Texas (UT) at Austin also was highly ranked for 2015 by U.S. News & World Report, at 52nd among national universities and 16th among public schools. The university also was ranked 42nd in the nation among best colleges for veterans. In 2012, UT had the country's twelfth largest single-campus population, with more than 52,000 students. On its 350-acre campus, UT houses 17 libraries and seven museums, as well as a newspaper and radio station. The campus offers more than 100 undergraduate programs and 170 graduate degree programs.
