Electrical Engineering Technician

As an electrical engineering technician, you'll work under the direction of electrical engineers to install, build, repair and calibrate components. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported in May 2018 that electrical and electronics engineering technicians had a median income of $64,330 (www.bls.gov). Technicians in the lowest ten percent earned $38,110 or less a year. Conversely, techs in the top ten percent made $95,140 or more annually.

Average salaries for top employers of these professionals included $63,350 for architectural, engineering and related services. For semiconductor and other electronic component manufacturing, the average salary was $62,270. Building equipment contractors employed the highest number of electricians in May 2018 and offered an average wage of $58,470. Local governments were also top employers, and they offered average wages of $68,210. California employed the most of these professionals and had an average annual wage of $69,320 as of May 2018, while New York was the state with the highest average wage of $77,810.

The median income for electrical and electronics drafters was $60,070 as of May 2018, according to the BLS. Those in the top ten percent of wage estimates earned $99,240 or more each year. On the other hand, drafters in the lowest ten percent made $36,660 or less annually.

Most were employed by architectural, engineering and related services and earned an average wage of $60,910. While California had the highest employment level and offered an average wage of $76,420 in May 2018, the highest-paying state was Washington, where electrical and electronics drafters averaged $88,120.

The BLS expects a 2% decline in employment for electrical and electronics engineering technicians over the 2016-2026 decade. The number employed in the field is expected to drop to 137,000. Decline in the manufacturing industry is a major factor for this lack of growth.
