What Steps Should I Take to Become a CPR Instructor?

You have a few options to consider if you're interested in becoming a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) instructor. The Red Cross and the American Heart Association both offer training programs that prepare candidates for work as a CPR instructor. Depending on what organization you choose to go through, you're likely to follow a different learning path, although all programs feature training in the same essential skills and techniques.

How Does the Red Cross Program Work?

The Red Cross offers training for instructors in a multitude of areas, including wilderness and remote first aid, lifeguarding, and, of course, CPR. There are blended-learning options available for both CPR/AED and First Aid training. The training consists of online content that must be completed prior to the in-person course meeting; a pre-course skills session that evaluates candidates' CPR/AED/First Aid skills and must be passed in order to continue the training; and the actual instructor training course, which includes practice teaching and culminates in an exam.

How Do I Get Certified Through The American Heart Association?

Aspiring instructors going through the AHA will first need to have current AHA provider status in CPR. Once this credential is earned, candidates must find the nearest AHA Training Center and complete an application form. After gaining entry into the program, students must successfully complete the Instructor Course, after which they will be granted the opportunity to begin teaching. In order to maintain quality control, new instructors will undergo a supervised period in which their teaching will be monitored for the first six months to ensure best practices.
