Internet engineering programs aren't common at the undergraduate level. However, you could opt to enroll in a bachelor's degree program in computer, electrical or telecommunications engineering or a similar discipline. In these programs, you'll be introduced to a broad range of telecommunications systems, including Internet, broadcasting and telephony networks. You'll also want to take courses in programming, data structures and mathematics. A solid undergraduate education that addresses concepts and skills used for the Internet can help you get in to a master's degree program in Internet engineering.
Master's degree programs in Internet engineering or Web science cover broadband and wireless networks, router and switch systems and computer servers. You're likely to take design, development and programming coursework as it relates to computers, software and networking. As with most master's degree programs, you'll have a capstone project or thesis in an area of your interest.
Doctoral programs in Internet engineering are rare. Within computer science, electrical engineering or information technology programs, you might find coursework or specializations in telecommunications engineering or Internet technologies.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) doesn't report specifically on Internet engineers; however, it does report on network and computer systems administrators.
