Job Duties

As an executive secretary, you could work with top executives to fulfill a variety of administrative functions. You'll be in charge of overseeing the secretaries and administrative assistants below you, so you'll need to make sure that all staff members perform the tasks required of them. Other advanced duties that you'll carry out include examining and organizing submissions, reports, business records and memos. You might work under a specific executive, arranging personalized agendas for them and preparing them for important meetings.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that executive secretaries and administrative assistants made an average salary of $61,550 per year as of May 2018 (www.bls.gov). According to the BLS, the top ten percent of these professionals earned $89,310 or more per year. In comparison, if you were in the lowest-paid ten percent of professionals, then your annual income was $36,950 or less as of May 2018.

Salary by Location

The BLS reported in May 2018 that the District of Columbia ($72,090), New York ($72,040), California ($71,590), Connecticut ($70,690) and New Jersey ($68,360) were the top-paying states for this occupation. The lowest-paying states at that time had mean wages between $32,500 and $49,410. Some of these included South Dakota, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Wyoming.

Salary by Industry

According to May 2018 figures from the BLS, the highest-paying industries according to mean wages were merchant wholesalers, nondurable goods ($83,050); other investment pools and funds ($81,160); other personal services ($80,360); independent artists, writers, and performers ($76,730); and apparel, piece goods, and notions merchant wholesalers ($76,180). Mean pay for some industries with the highest employment included $59,950 for colleges, universities and professional schools; $61,140 for local government; and $66,360 for the management of companies and enterprises.

Job Outlook

The BLS expected a 17% decline in employment for executive secretaries and executive administrative assistants from 2016-2026. Many managers now perform their own administrative tasks, but professionals leaving the field may create openings.

Popular employers of these professionals in May 2018 included colleges, universities and professional schools; local and state government departments; company and enterprise management; and securities, commodity contracts, and other financial investments and related activities. States with the highest concentration of employment for this profession included New York, Louisiana, the District of Columbia, South Dakota, and Massachusetts.
