According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), in May 2014, pharmacy technicians received average annual salaries of $31,090 (www.bls.gov). Additionally, PayScale.com reported that the total annual pay for pharmacy technicians ranged from $18,761 - $38,194 in September 2015.

The BLS reported that health and personal care stores employed the biggest percentage of pharmacy technicians in May 2014. A total of 192,290 were employed in that industry, and these professionals received $29,200 per year on average. The highest-paid pharmacy technicians worked for the federal executive branch of the government and earned $41,480 per year on average.

Salary Based on State

According to May 2014 BLS figures, pharmacy technicians earning the highest mean wages worked in Washington ($40,300), Alaska ($39,980), California ($39,710) and Hawaii ($36,400). Lower mean wages of $22,460-$28,450 were found in ten states located near or towards the eastern part of the country. A few of these include North Carolina, New Hampshire, Georgia, West Virginia and Ohio.

Salary Based on Years of Experience

PayScale.com reported in September 2015 that entry-level pharmacy technicians earned a median of $29,621 per year. Those mid-career earned median salaries of about $33,502, and experienced pharmacy technicians earned median salaries of $36,607.

Salary Based on Certification

You can choose to become certified through agencies like the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board or the National Healthcareer Association. Except for a few select states, certification is by no means mandatory for employment, but PayScale.com reports that most certified pharmacy technicians reported receiving salaries ranging from $20,153 - $37,872, as of September 2015.
