Bachelor's Degree Programs for Teacher Certification

Providence College

Providence offers a Bachelor of Arts degree with dual certification in elementary education and special education for students with mild to moderate disabilities. You'll learn to manage an inclusive classroom through coursework and field experiences at culturally and linguistically diverse schools. Starting in 2014, elementary/special education students will spend a full year student teaching. If you want to teach at the secondary level, you'll need to major in the subject you wish to teach as well as completing teacher education requirements. Music education graduates can be certified to teach at both the elementary and secondary levels.

Master's Degree Programs for Teacher Certification

Johnson & Wales University - Providence

The Master of Arts in Teaching at Johnson and Wales University allows you to earn a teacher's certification and master's degree in tandem. Coursework is experiential, meaning you learn through teaching at urban and suburban schools. You'll progress through the program with a cohort of other MAT students, learning as a group. In addition to classes and student teaching, you'll engage in educational research seminars and keep a portfolio of your work.

Providence College

Providence offers Master of Education degrees to aspiring teachers and to current teachers who want to add a certification to their credentials. The special education program will qualify you to apply for certification to teach elementary or secondary students with mild and moderate disabilities. You can apply for certification as a kindergarten through grade 12 literacy specialist after completing the M.Ed. in Literacy program. With an undergraduate degree in a secondary school subject area, you can earn teacher certification through the Providence Alliance for Catholic Teachers (PACT). You'll take courses towards and M.Ed. while teaching for two years at a Catholic school.

Providence also offers a Master of Arts in Teaching Mathematics that is open to students who have 24 or more math credit hours beyond pre-calculus or who have 18 credit hours at this level, plus six hours in education.

In the MAT/Teacher Certification Program, you'll focus on meeting teacher certification requirements, which include courses on education theory and methods. All programs include supervised student teaching. The elementary education degree program requires that you complete a thesis or pass a comprehensive exam. In early childhood education, you'll earn a Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Studies and complete certification requirements. You can also earn endorsements in middle school education and English as a second language.
