What You Need to Know

Persons in Idaho interested in working as nurse may decide to earn an associate's or a bachelor's degree in the field. An associate's degree 16 months to four semesters, while a bachelor's degree in nursing typically requires four years of study; at least one Idaho nursing program estimates time to completion to fall between three and six semesters. Idaho nursing programs are offered by public and private, four-year schools. Because of the practicum element of nursing programs, a background check, drug screening, immunization records, and/or tuberculosis screening may be required.

Associate's Degree Programs in Nursing

Brigham Young University - Idaho

This program offers a traditional and an alternate track to earning your associate degree in nursing. Traditional track classes, laboratory studies and clinical work take place during the day. Candidates for the program should have less than 48 undergraduate credits. The alternate track is for students with 48 or more credits. Courses in this program include surgical nursing, mental health nursing and maternal nursing. Both tracks will qualify you to sit for the NCLEX test to obtain credentialing as a registered nurse.

Lewis-Clark State College

This is a 60-credit program that begins with a prerequisite term of general education courses in psychology, math, biochemistry/organic chemistry, college writing, and anatomy/physiology, taken prior to applying to the nursing portion of the program. You'll need to pass each of these courses with at least a C in order to begin the practical nursing classes the following semester. Practical nursing classes include theory of practical nursing, child health and mental health nursing. You'll also be expected to complete a practicum. This program for practical nursing is approved by the Idaho Board of Nursing and will qualify you to sit for the NCLEX-PN.

Bachelor's Degree Programs in Nursing in Idaho

Boise State University

Boise State's bachelor's degree program in nursing will prepare you to become a registered nurse. The program takes five semesters to complete and candidates apply after completing a semester of prerequisite courses. These include classes in math, chemistry, biology, English, communications, psychology and health. The program includes clinical simulations, community clinical experiences and lectures. Course examples include dosage calculations, behavioral health, nursing leadership and health assessment. Boise State also offers an online, distance learning option for practicing RNs who want to complete their bachelor's degree.

BSN courses include physical assessment, community nursing and nursing leadership. Completion of the BSN degree requires that you take general education courses in addition to nursing classes.

To be accepted in the nursing program you must complete your general education courses and prerequisites during your first year in the Division of Health Sciences. You then apply in the fall semester of your sophomore year. Completion qualifies you to sit for the NCLEX-RN exam. Idaho State University also offers an accelerated program and a degree completion program for the bachelor's degree in nursing.

The LPN-BSN track also includes courses specific for LPNs such as transition to professional nursing and family health for LPNs.
