Where Can I Find Online Courses in Computer Aided Design & Drafting?

Computer aided design and drafting (CADD) is a sophisticated software program used in engineering, graphic, architectural and product design. An online college course in CADD can be the first step in learning to use this widely employed software program. Schools offering AutoCAD Drafting & Design Technology degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

What Is Computer Aided Drafting (CAD)

'CAD' is a software application that originally meant, 'computer aided drafting'. This program essentially allowed the process of drafting, done to this point manually, to be automated. However, CAD soon stood for 'computer aided design', since the software evolved to encompass 3D modeling. 'CADD' (Computer Aided Design and Drafting) includes both drafting and design and is sometimes referred to as just CAD. There are many CAD programs available, such as AutoCAD (one of the more used program). The following schools offer online college courses in CADD or CAD.

Important Information About CAD Programs

Degree Levels Usually offered in certificate, diploma or associate's degree; some 4-year design and engineering degrees offer CAD training as part of a degree program
Possible Career Fields Architecture, electrical, mechanical, civil and a variety of other fields
Certifications American Design Drafting Association (ADDA) offers certifications in a variety of specialties, including civil, architectural and mechanical
Key Skills Math skills, technical skills, detail oriented, creativity

Santa Monica College

The Interior Architectural Design program at Santa Monica College includes an online course in computer aided design and drafting. In this course, students examine basic techniques and uses of CADD as they relate to the field of interior design. This is an undergraduate course.

Dallas County Community College District

Mountain View College and Eastfield College, both part of the Dallas County Community College District, offer courses in CADD. These classes are Internet-based and offered through the eCampus. Courses can be taken that address CADD for mechanical drafting, architectural drafting and civil drafting and engineering. In an introductory CAD course, students learn about drawing setup, output and input devices, coordinating systems, layers, dimensions, text, scaling and rotating objects and storing shapes that are pre-defined. Intermediate and advanced courses are also offered.

MiraCosta College

MiraCosta College in Oceanside, CA, offers a beginning AutoCAD course online through its drafting department. Students of this course will learn how to create and modify 2D technical drawings for architectural and engineering projects as well as interior design and landscaping.

UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles)

UCLA Extension offers two AutoCAD courses online - Digital Presentation II: AutoCAD and Digital Presentation III: AutoCAD. Students can learn to become proficient using SketchUp software. These courses are given through the Architecture Department and stress architecture application. Students must have a background in drafting.
