Classes meet from 8-5 for the duration of the program and provide both classroom instruction and practical training outdoors. You'll learn how to assess patients' immediate and long-term medical needs during wilderness emergencies. Training sessions also cover issues such as hypothermia, heat injuries, infectious diseases and blood-borne pathogens. Upon graduation, you'll receive a Stonehearth Open Learning Opportunities (SOLO) Wilderness First Responder card and a CPR card.

National Outdoor Leadership School

The National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) offers wilderness first responder certification courses at various locations throughout the United States. A select number are available in the state of New York; some are sponsored by SUNY Cortland and are located at Raquette Lake, which is almost 300 miles north of New York City.

These 80-hour courses can teach you how to make emergency medical decisions, treat fractures and care for wounds. Other topics of study include pharmaceutical therapies and CPR. Upon completing the course and earning passing scores on both practical and written examinations, you'll receive CPR certification and wilderness first responder certification. If you're an EMT, you'll also earn wilderness EMT certification, and you can use 70 hours of this course towards continuing education requirements. If you're already a wilderness first responder looking for recertification options, you can enroll in NOLS' wilderness first aid courses, which are offered in Manhattan.
