Where Can I Find a List of Historically Black Colleges?

Historically Black Colleges and Universities, known as HBCUs, are located in 20 states, the District of Columbia and the Virgin Islands. Under a special White House project, the U.S. Department of Education's website provides information about Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities

The White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities, which was implemented in 1981, maintains a list of 102 accredited HBCUs on the U.S. Department of Education website (www.ed.gov). This list tracks the schools that fit the definition established in the Higher Education Act of 1965, which defines HBCUs as schools that were founded before 1964 and dedicated to the education of black Americans. The list includes links to the schools' websites, contact information for each school and details on the school's status (public or private and 2-year or 4-year).

In addition, the website offers information on grants, leadership seminars and other resources for the administrators of these schools. Some information about scholarships and internships is available for students on the website, too. Below is information on three Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
