A master's degree in communication disorders prepares students to become speech-language pathologists, speech therapists and communications specialists working in hospitals, schools and private practices. Pathologists diagnose, treat and attempt to prevent speech and communication disorders in patients.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, two out of five speech-language pathologists in 2016 worked in educational settings. After obtaining a master's degree in communication disorders, state licensure is required in order to practice.
