Texas offers courses and certificate programs for aspiring barbers in several cities, at both a 2-year community college and several smaller, private, for-profit schools. Completion time is approximately one year and students learn hair cutting, styling and grooming techniques, in preparation for the state licensing exam. Certificate Program in Barbering in Texas

Houston Community College - Southeast

The Southeast campus is one branch of the public Houston Community College (HCC). Its Class A barber certificate program prepares you to take the Texas barber licensing examinations. The 41-credit program includes 16-week fall and spring semesters, as well as a 10-week summer semester. New classes begin each term, so you can start throughout the year.

During the first semester, you must take introductory classes in hair design and barber styling. You can build upon your skills in the second semester through advanced barber styling courses. In the third semester, the focus shifts to include legal and management classes related to running a barbershop. Upon successful completion of the program, you may apply for a state license. If you earn your license, HCC also offers employment resources.

Advanced Barber College and Hair Design, Inc.

You're required to purchase a law book, t-shirt, and smock to participate in the barber course. It prepares you to sit for the state barber exam and involves hands-on experience. You can also go to trade shows.

Buckner Barber College

The curriculum at Buckner Barber College includes eight hours of orientation and 180 hours of theory, which covers topics ranging from barbering history to sanitary techniques. You learn about haircutting for men and women as well as grooming mustaches and beards. Professional ethics, salesmanship, and first aid are also areas of study.
