Many of the engineering degree programs offered at colleges in the Washington, DC area result in a bachelor's or master's degree. You would likely earn either a Bachelor of Science or Master of Science degree. Typically, you would need at least a 4-year degree to begin a career in the engineering field. Some programs focus on civil engineering, while others could provide studies in other areas including electrical engineering, environmental engineering, systems engineering, chemical engineering and mechanical engineering.

Depending on areas of concentration or specialization in any given program, you might take courses addressing structural design, soil mechanics, electrical circuits, construction management or systems analysis. Catholic University of America

One of 12 schools that occupy the largest campus in Washington, DC, Catholic University's School of Engineering offers a number of bachelor's and master's degrees in biomedical, civil, electrical and mechanical engineering. All of the school's programs are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of ABET, including the Bachelor of Civil Engineering program. The curriculum for this degree program includes classes in environmental, geotechnical and systems engineering, engineering structures, construction management and a choice of electives that will allow you to concentrate in either construction or environmental engineering. Internships are an important part of the construction engineering specialization, and if you are interested, you may be able to obtain a year-round or summer position through the Career Services Office.

The School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at the University of the District of Columbia is one of only four universities in the city to offer ABET-accredited undergraduate programs in civil, electrical or mechanical engineering, including a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. This program places a special emphasis on developing problem-solving strategies for urban environmental issues, particularly those in the Washington, DC, area. Degree requirements include coursework in electrical circuits, engineering mechanics, structures, water resources and systems analysis. You will also need to complete a series of 2-course sequences in at least four areas of civil engineering. As a graduate, this program can provide you with the skills you need to take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and obtain your license as a professional engineer (PE).

Graduate Engineering Programs in Washington, DC

Catholic University of America

At the Catholic University of America, you can earn a Master of Science in Civil Engineering degree in one of five majors and acquire the professional training you need for advanced level work in your field. Although the number of credit hours can vary, in general, the civil engineering degrees require a minimum of 30 credits to complete, and you will be able to choose between a thesis and a non-thesis option. Course topics can include studies in applied mathematics, applied science, engineering analysis, engineering design and construction management. The Master of Science degree is the standard, but individual programs also offer a Master of Civil Engineering for students who hold a Bachelor of Engineering. Other graduate degrees in engineering are available from the following departments: electrical engineering and computer science, materials science and engineering, biomedical engineering, engineering management and mechanical engineering.

Howard University

Howard University offers a Master of Engineering degree in four majors with a thesis or non-thesis (project) option. As a graduate student in the environmental and water resources engineering program, you can also choose to concentrate in a variety of sub-disciplines, such as water quality and treatment, storm water monitoring, wastewater treatment, contaminants or hazardous waste treatment. If you decide to pursue a degree in geotechnical engineering, your coursework will cover topics in foundation engineering, groundwater and seepage, soil properties, earth structures and advanced methods of laboratory testing.

Major requirements for the structural and transportation engineering programs include the design of concrete and metal structures and studies in highway design, traffic engineering, transportation planning and operations research. The Master of Engineering degree programs take a minimum of 30 credits to complete and 20 of these credit hours must be in your major. To date, Howard University's Master of Engineering degrees in civil and mechanical engineering, and Master of Science degrees in chemical and electrical engineering have not been accredited by ABET.

Depending on your area of specialization, you may have the opportunity to help improve the water quality of the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay watershed or work with a state-of-the-art earthquake simulator. While the school's Bachelor of Science degree programs in biomedical, civil, electrical and mechanical engineering are ABET-accredited, this Master of Science program in civil and environmental engineering has not been accredited by the organization.
