What You Need to Know

Students interested in becoming paramedics in Kansas may choose from a number of schools offering associate's degree programs in the field. Some, but not all, require that applicants to such paramedic programs be already certified as emergency medical technicians (EMTs). Paramedic programs are offered by two-year, public schools throughout Kansas and require three semesters to two years to complete. All paramedicine programs include clinical training, allowing students to earn hands-on experience in the field under supervision.

Coffeyville Community College

Coffeyville Community College offers an associate's degree program for paramedic training that can be completed in a minimum of 18 months over 4 semesters. You partake in lectures, as well as learn practical and observation skills and learn via clinical and field internships. The program includes 64 credits and requires at least 1,589 clock hours to complete. This type of degree is necessary to take Kansas board exams.

Kansas City Kansas Community College

Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC) offers a 2-year paramedic mobile intensive care technician (MICT) degree program. The paramedic specific training includes 60 units, and 27-28 units are part of general education studies. The entire program is more than 1,100 hours of study, including more than 700 hours of clinical internships and more than 400 hours of labs and classroom education. The Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions accredited KCKCC's paramedic program, which means that it is approved to prepare graduates for the NREMT-Paramedic exam.

You must receive a 'C' grade in order to pass and be eligible for the Kansas Board of Emergency Medical Services or NREMT exams.

Students must finish at least 20 units of general education courses, such as English composition and anatomy and physiology, in order to receive a degree. The school added a course that teaches paramedics how to deal with compromised airways in 2012.
