How Do I Become a Nurse Practitioner?

All nurse practitioners (NPs) are advanced nurses and require a master's degree, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (www.bls.gov). Most Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree programs prefer to admit people who have a bachelor's degree in nursing, but many offer you bridge programs that will fill in your knowledge gap, whether your bachelor's degree in is an unrelated field or you earned an associate's degree in nursing to become a registered nurse.

Some schools offer programs specifically for becoming a women's health NP. Others combine the degree with a related field, such as nurse-midwifery or adult nurse practitioners. Nurse-midwives specialize in prenatal, delivery and postpartum care, while becoming an adult nurse practitioner allows you to offer primary care to male patients as well. Some or all of your courses may be offered online.

How Do I Become Certified?

Certification for women's health NPs is offered through the National Certification Corporation (NCC). The corporation requires you to have current licensure as a registered nurse, have completed an educational program for women's health and have graduated after 2005 to be eligible to take the certification exam. The exam itself costs between $250 and $325, depending on how you submit and where you plan to take the test.

If you graduated from a program that offered a combined degree, you may be eligible for additional certifications. Certification for nurse-midwives is offered through the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB), and certification for adult nurse practitioners is offered through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
