Job Description

Art teachers help students develop their skills in the visual arts. They can work with all grade levels, from preschool to twelfth grade. As an art teacher, you might teach painting, drawing, sculpture, or other visual arts. Art teachers should develop their own ability in the arts to better help students learn what they need to. They should also have the flexibility and empathy needed to help students grow in their artistic ability.

Educational Requirements

The simplest way to become a teacher in Alabama is to enroll in an education preparation program at an approved higher education institution. A list of Alabama-approved institutions can be found here. Your path to becoming an art teacher will vary from program to program; some institutions have art education majors available, while others offer majors in art and minors in education.

If you cannot or prefer not to enroll in an undergraduate education preparation program, there are alternate paths available. You can also earn a master's in education and complete requirements for certification, or you can complete certification requirements as an Irregular Post-Graduate student.

Test Requirements

In order to be eligible for a teaching certificate in visual arts in Alabama, you must pass three Alabama Basic Skills Assessments: Praxis Core Academic Skills Reading (with a minimum score of 156), Writing (minimum score of 162), and Mathematics (minimum score of 150). You must also pass the Praxis Subject Assessment Art: Content Knowledge (P-12), with a minimum score of 158. Finally, you will have to pass two Pedagogical Assessments: Principles of Learning and Teaching for the grade level you intend to teach (minimum score 157-160 depending on the grade level) and edTPA Pedagogical Assessment Visual Arts (minimum score 37).

To take these tests, you will make an appointment with a local Praxis test center. Assessments will have multiple-choice questions, and may include short written answers.

Certification Requirements

Upon completing your education requirements for certification and passing the necessary exams, you will be qualified for a Professional Educator Certificate. If you have not completed an education preparation program but you have a bachelor's or master's degree in art, you may also be able to receive a Professional Certificate in a Teaching Field (PCTF). You should contact the school you wish to work for to see if you might be eligible.

  • 6 semester hours at an Alabama-accredited senior institution
  • 100 hours of professional development
  • 3 semester hours and 50 hours of professional development
