Job Description

Teachers play a crucial role in helping prepare students for success. By creating lesson plans, giving tests, and assigning homework, a teacher can help students learn effectively. Responsible for daily oversight and management of their pupils, it is a teacher's job to try to provide an environment conducive to learning and retention.

Alternate Teaching Licenses Available

For secondary teachers, Iowa offers the Fast-Track Teacher Intern Program or the Regents Alternative Pathway to Iowa Licensure (RAPIL). This program allows placement without having student teaching experience and grants the individual an Iowa Teacher Intern License. For other levels of teachers, Iowa requires an Initial Teaching License. However, the state does offer both an Executive Director Decision Conditional License and a Class-B Conditional License as alternate licensing options for prospective teachers to begin teaching before they have completed all of the necessary coursework for a specific endorsement.

Education and Exam Requirements

The state of Iowa requires a bachelor's degree to become a licensed teacher and may require additional endorsements for specific areas of concentration.

For licensure in Iowa, prospective teachers must complete age specific general pedagogy exams. The required exams are Praxis 5622 Principles of Teaching and Learning: Grades K-6, Praxis 5623 Principles of Teaching and Learning: Grades 5-9, and Praxis 5624 Principles of Teaching and Learning: Grades 7-12. Passing scores for Praxis exams are 160 for Praxis 5622 and 5623, and 157 for Praxis 5624.

Application

To apply for a license, you must submit a completed application, your official transcripts, fingerprints and background check, required exam scores, and any associated fees.

Make sure you provide all required documents and fees before submitting your application.

License Validity & Renewal

Completion of the Fast-Track Teacher Intern Program, or the Regents Alternative Pathway to Iowa Licensure (RAPIL), grants the individual a Teacher Intern License for a period of 1-year, after which time the teacher may apply for an Initial Teaching License.

An Executive Director Decision Conditional License requires that the individual hold an Initial Teaching License and have an offer of employment in a new endorsement area as well as having completed 2/3 of the coursework. In areas of teacher shortage, completion of 1/2 the coursework is required. This License is valid for a period of 1-year and is non-renewable, but license holders may apply for a Class-B license once endorsement requirements have been met.

A Class-B Conditional License has the same general requirements as an Executive Director Decision Conditional License, allows license holders to complete training for additional endorsements, is valid for a period of 2 years, and is non-renewable with one emergency extension.
