Job Description

As an art teacher, you can show your students ways to express themselves through a wide variety of creative mediums. You could have them sculpt out of raw materials, sketch a figure based on a live model, or provide paints to bring out their inner symbols. When you aren't inside a studio, you can teach them about the history of different movements of art and highlight some of the more famous names in those periods. As with any other class in a school building, you will distribute grades and give feedback on exams and other assignments. If your school has a gallery, you might be in charge of exhibiting student work. You could also sponsor a student-run organization and act as its advisor.

Education and Training Requirements

Studying to become an art teacher in Oregon has stricter requirements than some other states do. Art education mostly exists at the graduate level, with programs such as the Master of Arts in Teaching available at several universities. These graduate programs allow you to study art theory and expand your portfolio while also preparing to take on art classrooms of your own. You could spend half days or full days as a student teacher in the later portion of your degree, instructing art in middle or high schools under licensed teacher supervision. You may need to submit an existing portfolio of your work before entering a graduate program.

Exam Requirements

Oregon requires art teachers to take two different exams before they can obtain a license. You will need to earn a passing score of at least 220 on the NES Art exam, which allows you three hours for completion. It contains 150 multiple-choice questions, all answered in electronic format. All teachers, including those in art, have to pass the Protecting Student and Civil Rights in the Educational Environment test. This exam runs for 90 minutes, containing 60 multiple-choice questions. Scoring 220 on this one means you have a passing score.

License Requirements

After completing a criminal background check and finishing your educational and exam requirements, you'll become eligible to apply for a Preliminary Teaching License. For three years, you can teach art in Oregon with this credential, and you can renew this license as long as you complete 75 hours of continuing education credits. If you have four years of full-time teaching experience (or six for part-time), you can upgrade your license to a professional level. At this stage, you are set for five years, after which you can renew your license with 150 continuing education credits.
