How to Become a Colorado Math Teacher

You will work with students at middle and high school levels as a Colorado math teacher. The licensing process starts with earning your bachelor's degree and completing some other exam requirements.

Education Required

You will enroll in an approved educator training program to complete your bachelor's degree. The state of Colorado requires that all teaching candidates complete a student teaching rotation as part of their training program.

Praxis Test

You will need to take the Praxis test for your desired level of certification. The Mathematics: Content Knowledge is for grades 7-12 and requires a passing score of 152. You will have 2.5 hours to take the test, which has 60 multiple-choice questions. The Middle School Mathematics test is for grades 6-8 and requires a passing score of 165. This test takes 2 hours to complete and has 55 multiple-choice questions.

Initial Teaching License and Renewal Process

The state of Colorado requires that all teaching candidates get fingerprinted for a criminal background check via the Colorado State Bureau of Investigation. You will complete an online application for your initial teaching license and supply materials such as the approved program verification form, your official transcripts, and your Praxis scores. The application asks for your work history for the past five years and all relevant teaching experience. The initial teaching license is good for three years and is renewable more than once if you are not ready to upgrade to the professional teaching license.

Professional Teaching License and Renewal Process

You will need to complete an induction program approved by the Colorado State Board of Education before you can apply for your professional teaching certificate. This program consists of supervised mentoring, skills training, and ethics training. Your professional teaching license is valid for five years and requires 6 college credits or 90 clock hours of professional development activities for renewal. You can use a mixture of professional development activities and college credits, with 1 continuing education credit equal to 10 clock hours and 1 college credit equal to 15 clock hours. It should be noted that you will only need to get a new background check if you have not maintained an active teaching license.

Master Teaching Certificate

This teaching certificate is available if you achieve certification through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. You can apply for this certification once you have three years of teaching experience. The certification process includes three portfolios and taking a computerized test.
