Education Requirements

Prospective math teachers must obtain a bachelor's or higher degree in math from a state-approved educator preparation program. Certification is available at three levels - elementary (Grades 1-6), middle school (5-8) and high school (8-12). Typically, these programs are extensive and candidates are often required to complete coursework in other areas beyond the subject, such as humanities or science. Additionally, field experiences in real classroom settings ensure that they are prepared for their future job. The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) website provides a list of educational institutions where candidates can earn their degree.

Exam Requirements

Those who wish to become a certified math teacher in Massachusetts are required to pass the MTEL Mathematics for the level they wish to teach. However, elementary math teacher candidates can also qualify by passing either the Middle School Mathematics or Mathematics MTEL tests, and a passing score on the Mathematics MTEL will suffice for a prospective middle school math teacher. Applicants must also achieve passing grades in the MTEL Communication and Literacy Skills. All aforementioned tests are computer-based, four hours and fifteen minutes long, and have a qualifying score of 240. Further, you can obtain the SEI endorsement by passing the MTEL SEI.

Applying through ELAR

The most convenient way to apply for an initial license is through the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's Educator Licensure And Renewal (ELAR) portal. Applicants have to first create a profile after which they must upload the necessary documents, including official college transcripts and MTEL scores. Once the application is approved, they will receive their initial license which is valid for five years.

Renewal Requirements

Candidates can apply for a professional license after the initial license period, provided they meet certain requirements. One of these requirements is to earn a master's or higher degree in math. Also, they will have to complete three years of teaching, 50 hours of mentored experience, and a one-year induction program, all within the initial license period. If these requirements are not met, candidates have the option of extending the initial license by five more years after which they can once again try for professional certification. The professional license is also valid for five years.
