Job Description

Spanish teachers in Virginia will work with different age brackets of students, depending on the grade level that they teach. Elementary school students are typically between the ages of 5 and 10, middle school students are between the ages of 11 and 14, high school students are typically between the ages of 15 and 18, and postsecondary students are usually 18 and older. Although Spanish teachers can work with different ages of students, their daily responsibilities are mostly the same. These responsibilities include maintaining their classrooms, grading student's assignments, creating lesson plans, and enforcing classroom rules.

Education Requirements

No matter what level they plan to teach on, all potential Spanish teachers must earn a minimum of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Though a higher degree is not required for elementary, middle, and high school, most colleges look for candidates with a master's degree or higher. Those wishing to be Spanish teachers should major in Spanish. Some of the potential classes that students could expect would be Spanish Language, Spanish Culture, Spanish Art, etc.

Exam Requirements

There are three required tests for those wishing to become Spanish teachers in the state of Virginia. First, there is the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview, and this exam is actually a conversation between an applicant and an interviewer to assess a candidate's ability to speak proficiently. The second exam is the ACTFL Writing Proficiency Test, which consists of a series of different prompts that ask for written responses. Potential teachers can register for these tests online, and there is a fee of $65 for the writing test and $134 for the oral interview that must be paid as well. Lastly, there is the reading instructional assessment that is required for anyone wishing to teach in elementary school.

Additional Requirements

Before becoming a certified teacher, there are a few more requirements that need to be met. First, all teachers will need to have completed Child Abuse and Neglect Recognition and Intervention Training. Teachers will also need to complete Emergency First Aid training, AED Training, and CPR including Hands-on Practice training. Lastly, teachers will have to complete Dyslexia Awareness Training. Upon completion of these training secessions and the requirements above, teachers are then ready to apply for their initial license.

License Renewal

In order to renew a teacher's license in the state of Virginia, teachers will need to complete the appropriate form and pay a $50 application fee. In addition to this, teachers will need to be able to prove that they have completed 180 Professional Development Points. Teachers will also have to prove that they have completed the additional training that is listed in the Additional Requirements section above.
