The first credential may be either a Multiple Subject credential, an Early Childhood Education credential, or an Elementary credential. The second credential may be a Single Subject credential in either English, math, science, social science, or foreign language. You can also obtain a Secondary certificate in these subjects as well as a General Secondary Teaching credential or a Special Secondary Teaching credential in Speech Arts.

Exam Requirements

California has a number of exams that teachers must pass. Teachers in California are also required to take a course or pass an exam on the US Constitution.

Then you must pass the subject exams for which you are earning your credentials. Applicants for the Multiple Subject credential are additionally required to take the Reading Instruction Competence Assessment (RICA) examination.
