Job Description

Daycare teachers take care of children while their parents attend work or school. These children are not yet old enough to attend school (generally, birth to age 5). Daycare teachers provide their students with daily educational activities. They also ensure the children are fed and assist them with daily tasks depending on their age and ability.

Educational Requirements

Daycare teachers, also called caregivers, are required to have at least an associate's degree in a field such as early childhood education, nursing, or child development. Alternately, they can hold the Child Development Associate credential from the Council for Professional Recognition.

If one wishes to be the lead caregiver, they will require a bachelor's degree in a child-related field. The course needs to have included specific content in infant/toddler growth, development, and curriculum. In addition to these requirements, candidates may gain preference by earning endorsement from the Michigan Association for Infant Mental Health (MiAIMH).

Background Check Requirements

Michigan runs comprehensive background checks on all childcare providers. These background checks include fingerprinting, an NCIC sex offender check, a central registry check (CA/N), a disciplinary action check, and a criminal and CA/N registry for any state where the applicant has lived in the previous five years. Failure to return the appropriate forms along with their associated fees will result in one being declared ineligible to be connected to a childcare facility.

Certification Information

The state of Michigan does not grant certification for individual daycare teachers. Instead, daycare teachers are encouraged to earn an associate's or bachelor's degree. Alternatively, they can earn a CDA credential. CDA credentials are offered by the Council for Professional Recognition.

CDA Requirements

To be credentialed by the Council for Professional Recognition, there are several requirements. One must have a high school diploma, 480 hours of experience working with young children, and 120 hours of professional education in eight specified subject areas (for example, planning a safe and healthy learning environment). One must also prepare a professional portfolio. A professional portfolio consists of education documentation, family questionnaires, six reflective statements of competence, ten resources, and a professional philosophy statement.

CDA Exam

After one submits their application to be credentialed, they must take the CDA exam. The exam consists of 60 questions and five scenario questions; the test taker has an hour and forty-five minutes to answer all multiple-choice questions. After the exam, a specialist will visit the location of one's work to observe them with working with children.

CDA Fees and Renewal

The initial cost of a CDA credential is $425 for online applications. Those who send in paper applications are charged $500. The costs to renew a CDA credential are $125 for online renewals and $150 for paper renewals. All fees are non-refundable.

The CDA is valid for three years; renewal requirements include membership in a professional childhood organization and 80 hours of work experience with children. Renewal candidates must also either complete 4.5 continuing education credits, 3 college credits, or 45 hours of relevant training.
