What Can You Do with a DNP?

Medical and Health Services Manager

Medical and health service managers coordinate healthcare facilities, departments, or small practices. Medical and health service managers must possess sufficient knowledge in healthcare, ethics, and leadership; these are fundamental parts of a doctoral nursing program. These managers may maintain compliance with regulations and laws, manage department or facility finances, train and schedule employees, and represent their facility or department at meetings.

Registered Nurse

Most registered nurses need only a bachelor's degree, and clinical nurse specialists need a master's degree. Those with a doctoral degree may continue working as RNs or CNSs, or may choose to move into management positions. With work experience and doctoral education, nurses possess valuable expertise that many employers, healthcare and otherwise, need for healthcare-related positions.

Advanced Practice Registered Nurse

Advanced practice registered nurses, or APRNs, manage patient care and may provide specialty or primary healthcare. DNP programs are built to prepare graduates for these positions, and some graduates may have been able to specialize in their DNP for a specific APRN role. APRNs include several positions: nurse anesthetists, or CRNAs, who provide anesthesia and supporting services; nurse midwives, who provide women's care including delivery and wellness care; and nurse practitioners, who may work alone as primary care providers, often working with certain populations (such as pediatrics). APRNs may also perform research, train other nurses and staff members, as well as prescribe medications.

Postsecondary Teacher

Many postsecondary schools seek educators who hold a doctoral degree because they have extensive knowledge in their degree area. Those who have completed a DNP or Ph.D. in Nursing program may find teaching positions in healthcare and nursing subjects. As educators, they will create instruction plans, give lectures (online or on-campus), grade and advise students, and may be responsible for conducting and publishing research.

Job Title Median Salary (2018)* Estimated Job Growth (2018-2028)*
Medical and Health Services Manager $99,730 18%
Registered Nurse $71,730 12%
Advanced Practice Registered Nurse $113,930 26%
Postsecondary Teacher $78,470 11%
