How To Earn A DNP Degree

A DNP degree can take between one and three years, depending on if students start out with a bachelor's degree or a master's degree. Over the course of obtaining a DNP degree, students will take classes such as biostatistics, epidemiology, and ethics.

Biostatistics

A graduate-level biostatistics course could cover topics like probability, the testing of a hypothesis, estimation, and discrete variables. This course could also teach students about statistics in research and analysis. Students taking this class should have a prior knowledge of calculus to be successful in this course.

Epidemiology

A class in epidemiology can teach students about the study of different diseases. Some of the topics covered in this course could include how diseases spread, identifying diseases, identifying causes of disease, and how to contain diseases.

Ethics

An ethics class will teach students fundamentals of decision making that they will use in their nursing careers. Some of the topics that may be covered in this class include right and wrong, morality, the theory of good and bad, and virtue and vice. Students in this class may also study philosophers and their views on the field of ethics.

DNP Admission Requirements

The admission requirements for a DNP program differ depending on whether a student is entering into a BSN to DNP or an MSN to DNP track, as one allows you to enroll with a bachelor's degree in nursing while the other requires a master's degree in nursing. Students entering into either program will also need to hold a current RN nursing license. Those applying to a DNP program will also need to meet minimum GPA requirements as well as submit GRE scores. Some programs also require a specific amount of work experience.

Louisiana students have several schools where they could earn a DNP, either through an MSN to DNP or a BSN to DNP program. There are a number of specialization options available that prepare students for different career opportunities upon graduation, including nurse leaders, family nurse practitioners, or nurse anesthetists.
