Job Description of an Elementary Teacher

Elementary educators teach a diverse range of subjects, from English and mathematics to music and visual arts. They are responsible for guiding young children on their educational path and also tasked with the development of their wards' social and personal skills. These teachers work in big classrooms that comprise students from different socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. Often, they work with children individually and can introduce individualized activities to help students with any learning difficulties. Further, they communicate with other teachers and with parents and guardians to ensure that the children are making the right progress.

Education and Training Requirements

Prospective candidates must first earn a bachelor's or higher degree in elementary education. The traditional route for this is to complete a teacher preparation program approved by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE). Besides, applicants must also complete six semester hours of required reading courses.

Elementary teacher preparation programs are structured in such a way that every course builds upon the previous one, enabling candidates to grow with each passing term. Coursework covers subject areas such as classroom management, child health and well-being, educational psychology, and teaching children with special needs. These programs include a teaching internship at the end of the program to ensure that applicants have the necessary skills to teach in real classroom environments.

Additionally, applicants must also achieve valid certification in first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation from MDE-approved institutions such as the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association.

Exam Requirements

Candidates seeking to become an elementary teacher in Michigan are required to pass the MTTC for elementary education. This three-and-a-half-hour long computer-based test covers 150 multiple-choice questions. The subtests include English language arts and world languages (24 percent of the test), mathematics (22 percent), science (18 percent), social studies (16 percent), visual and performing arts (10 percent), and health education and physical education (10 percent). The passing score for the test is 220.

Renewal Requirements

A standard teaching license is valid for five years. To renew the certificate, teachers must accumulate six semester hours from an MDE-accredited educational institution. This certification step in not necessary if a teacher earns a master's or higher degree in education from a state-approved university, before applying for renewal. However, this degree can be used just one time for renewal.
