Getting a Master's Degree in Environmental Sociology

Environmental sociologists study the way humans impact the environment and how we can prevent further damage in the future. A master's degree in environmental and sociology studies can be very beneficial in advancing towards a great career.

Master's programs typically last for 2 years, and students may continue advancing towards a PhD after graduation.

Climate Change

Climate change is at the forefront of environmental conflict, and with good reason, as everyone across the world has felt the impact, be it wildfires or hurricanes or unusually warm weather. Students may study extreme weather conditions and disasters. Courses also generally go over preventative methods, such as renewable energy, solar paneling and the most recent in green technologies.

Students studying conservation may explore different ways to preserve the environment, like environmental engineering, waste management and other green technology methods. Courses may cover how to conserve delicate ecosystems such as national forests and wetlands. The science of ecology is also studied in many courses on conservation. Some courses may focus on specific parts of the globe while others may focus generally on a global scale.

Management and Development

Environmental management and development is concerned with the sustainability of both the economic infrastructure of society and the natural world. These courses generally focus on corporate social responsibility and data analysis of management programs. Some classes may examine different types of environmental management systems which help corporations to regulate their emissions into the atmosphere.

Environmental Policy

Environmental policy is concerned with how society can be sustained legally and ethically while preserving the natural world. Generally explored are different methods used to implement socially adaptable environmental policies to conserve the environment, such as environmental management systems (EMS). These courses often overlap with management and development.

Research Design

Research in the field of environmental sociology involves gathering data from different social groups to learn how they coexist with the natural world and the impacts of society on the environment. Students study both qualitative and quantitative research methods and different approaches to research design.

Data Analysis and Statistics

Students use data analysis and statistics to examine different social groups and measure the impact on environments around the world. Classes may teach such useful tools as spatial analysis, energy analysis or competitive analysis (also known as modelling) to form a clear picture of what is happening between society and the natural world on a global scale.
