Free Online Organic Chemistry College Courses & Lectures

Free organic chemistry courses can be found online and are usually provided by college institutions. They are structured similarly to the courses in the classroom, but the formatting may vary. This article covers available course formats and materials. Schools offering Science, Technology, and International Security degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

Overview of Free Online Organic Chemistry Courses

Organic chemistry primarily deals with chemical reactions and compounds that consist of carbon. Studying this sub-section of chemistry will require a solid understanding of general chemistry first in order to understand the more complex, nuanced concepts and theories taught in the field. Courses covering this topic online are usually formatted with video lectures and notes; however, some courses may only have notes or detailed reading assignments. Also, although many free online courses exist for this subject, none of them offer any type of certification upon completion.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) offers free Open Courseware (OCW) classes that cover various aspects of organic chemistry. The primary courses offered are Organic Chemistry I and II, and they both consist of lecture notes, exams, and problem sets with solutions. Although the majority of the courses are undergraduate level, MIT also provides a few graduate-level courses in organic chemistry which cover topics such as alkylation and adding alkylmetals to carbonyls. The course materials are available for download in PDF format; however, the textbook that accommodates the course will have to be purchased separately in order to completely follow along with the syllabus. Some topics that are covered in the Organic Chemistry I course include:

  • Acidity
  • Cyclohexane
  • Molecular orbital theory
  • Stereochemistry
  • Thermo/kinetics

Yale University

Yale University offers a 'Freshman Organic Chemistry I' course through their Open Yale Courses website. The course is available without registration and is formatted with more than 30 video lectures, all of which are available as audio files and text transcripts if needed. The lectures include focus on topics covered in the first semester of organic chemistry and cover fundamental concepts such as laws of force, one-electron atoms, and kinetic energy before building on more advanced aspects of the field. The course does not include the textbook for free; however, you can obtain the book for a discounted price through Yale University. But aside from the book, all the accompanying reading assignments are available on the resources page of each lecture. Some additional module titles featured in this course are:

  • Rise of the Atomic Theory
  • Chemical Reactivity
  • Understanding Molecular Structure and Energy through Standard Bonds
  • Reality and the Orbital Approximation

University of California - Irvine

The University of California in Irvine (UCI) has a few OCW courses in organic chemistry that are available for free. The courses represent three respective quarters of organic chemistry and are available in video lecture format, along with various worksheets and notes. Also, the lectures are based around a textbook; however, the textbook is not included in the OCW resources and will have to be purchased separately. It's also important to note that none of the courses provide any problem sets or practice exams to check your comprehension, so if you need practice material you will have to find it from a different resource. Some topics covered in these courses include:

  • Ionic and covalent bonds
  • Alkyl Halides
  • Carbocation
  • Carboxylic acids
