Education and Training Requirements

Art teachers in New Jersey can begin their careers by earning a bachelor's degree. You can do this through a Bachelor of Arts in Art Education program, which combines courses in the studio with course topics in art history. You could explore topics like drawing, visual thinking, and the use of 2-D and 3-D mediums. During the last portions of your studies, you can begin a student teaching program, possibly with the chance to teach art in another country. Your student teaching prepares you to lead students at multiple grade levels, giving you some flexibility when looking for a job.

Exam Requirements

New Jersey requires art teachers to pass a Praxis content exam in their area. The Praxis Art: Content Knowledge exam allows two hours to finish, containing 120 questions. Questions on the exam address responses to art, Western traditions, and the process of making art. New Jersey also requires all educators, including art teachers, to pass a basic skills assessment. If you did not complete the SAT or ACT, Praxis offers the Core Academic Skills for Educators exam, which contains three parts: writing, math, and reading. You could choose to take all three subtests at once, or you can set several appointments to stagger the exams.

Certificate Requirements

Although New Jersey does not require any certificate renewals, you will still have multiple requirements to fulfill on your way to becoming a fully certified educator. Once you are done with your exams and student teaching, you can apply for a Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing. With this credential, you can enter the Provisional Teacher Process, a New Jersey educator program that runs for about two years and evaluates your performance in the classroom. After a recommendation from the education department, you can convert your certificate to a Standard Certificate, which is good for the duration of your teaching career.
