Step 1: Earn a Bachelor's Degree

To become a history teacher in Louisiana, individuals need a bachelor's degree, usually in history or a closely related field. They must also successfully complete a teacher preparation program, which focuses on education policies and foundations, classroom management, lesson planning, and student assessments. At many universities, students can opt to complete a bachelor's degree in secondary education with a social studies concentration. This degree fulfills both the bachelor's degree requirement and the teacher preparation program requirement. Teacher preparation programs also require students to complete a year of student teaching, which satisfies the residency requirement by the state.

Coursework for social studies education degrees focus on history, geography, sociology, and other related areas. Some programs have built in electives, which allow students to further specialize in the social studies subject areas they are most interested. Students who wish to teach history should fill these slots with history courses in order to make the most of the structure of education degrees.

Step 2: Pass Three State Examinations

The state of Louisiana requires teachers to pass a basic skills test, a subject area test, and a principles of teaching test prior to licensure.

The basic skills test requirement can be met with the Praxis CORE Academic Skills for Educators test. This test is broken up into three parts and tests students on their general abilities in reading, writing, and math. To pass, students need to get scores of at least 156, 162, and 150 for each respective section.

Aspiring history teachers also need to complete a Praxis subject area exam with a score of at least 160. For history teachers, the applicable exam is the Grade 6-12 Social Studies: Content and Interpretation test.

The last required exam is the Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching exam. These exams are based on which level the prospective teacher plans to teach. Since history teachers usually teach at the middle school and high school levels, one would take the PLT: 7-12 exam. A passing score is 157.

Step 3: Apply for Licensure

Once individuals have completed their bachelor's degrees and teacher preparation programs, completed the one-year student teaching, and passed all three exams, they can apply for Louisiana's initial teaching certification on the Department of Education's website. Applications must be submitted electronically via the Department of Education's portal, and the processing fee is $50.
