General Requirements for the Residency Teacher Certificate

To meet the academic requirements for the Residency Teacher Certificate, the candidate must earn at least a bachelor's degree in an approved teacher education program that focused on the area of Mathematics. The degree must have been earned from an accredited college or university in order to be considered by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI).

Testing Requirements

All prospective educators must take the Washington Educator Skills Test (WEST) B basic skills assessment when entering their approved teacher education program. As a prospective Math teacher, the candidate has two options for the National Evaluation Series (NES) content assessment: Mathematics or Middle Grades Mathematics. The required edTPA content assessment also offers two options: Elementary Mathematics and Secondary Mathematics. The candidate can register online for these tests where they will be shown the list of approved testing centers.

Background Check Information

By law, all prospective educators must pass a background check. In this background check process, the applicant must have their fingerprints collected so they can be analyzed by the Washington State Patrol (WSP) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The results of the background check will be sent to the OSPI where they will be added to the online Educational Data System (EDS). If the results show a history of criminal convictions, the results will be returned to the WSP and FBI. Application Process

The application for a Residency Teacher Certificate starts when the candidate requests a recommendation from the college or university where they completed the degree program. This request can be made through the E-certification online portal on the OSPI website. Once the recommendation is received, the candidate can complete the application process and pay the $74 application fee through the portal using a credit card. If the certificate is granted, the candidate will be able to print their certificate from the portal as well.

Certificate Information

The Residency Teacher Certificate is valid for five years and can be renewed as long as the educator completes at least 100 professional development clock hours or the equivalent as well as a course in Issues of Abuse. The educator can also upgrade their Residency Teacher Certificate to a Professional Certificate by completing the Professional Certificate Assessment (ProTeach) or earning National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certification or completing a program in another state that has been approved by the Professional Educator Standards Board (PESB). The educator would still need to complete the training in Issues of Abuse.
