What Are the Pathways Available?

There are ten different pathways to gaining initial certification as a math teacher in the state of New York. Pathways are divided based on your education credentials and prior (if any) teaching certifications. Individual pathways exist for those who have already obtained a teaching certification in New York state, another U.S. state, or from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. For those without a prior teaching certification, the two main pathways involve the completion of an approved New York State Department of Education (NYSED) teacher preparation program, or an individual evaluation of the candidate's course subjects and college credits (which must cover several subjects including liberal arts, pedagogical core, and mathematics). In order to be eligible for the individual evaluation pathway, you must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Be sure to check the NYSED website for more information on the specific college credit parameters.

What Are the Required Examinations?

For those without a prior teaching certification (either in New York or out of state), the pathway to an initial certificate involves the completion of three separate examinations. The first is known as the Educating All Students (EAS) test, which is the main New York State teaching certification exam. This examination covers several aspects of teaching theory as well as general education topics in liberal arts. The second is a Content Specialty Test (CST), which covers mathematics skills for mathematics certification candidates. The third is known as the edTPA, which is a test of lesson preparation and live teaching skills in an educational setting. The NYSED website has all relevant information on the preparation and registration instructions for these examinations.

Is There Additional Training Involved?

Though each track has separate training requirements, most tracks involve the the completion of a six hour workshop on preventing harassment and bullying as part of the Dignity for All Students act. Some pathways that do not involve the completion of a NYSED-approved teacher preparation program have additional training requirements, which include school violence intervention and child abuse identification (among others).

Are There Any Other Requirements?

All teacher certification candidates must pass a national criminal background check (which involves a fingerprint scab with one of several approved vendors in the state). Check the Office of School Personnel Review and Accountability (OSPRA) website for a directory of approved vendors and relevant instructions. In order to pass the background check, you must not have any prior convictions or criminal record.
