Job Description

Science teachers introduce students to the physical world around them. You might end up teaching biology, chemistry, physics, or general science depending on your age level of teaching. You'll craft lesson plans and stick to a curriculum for the academic semester or year. You may have different grade levels, and will need to adjust your teaching methods appropriately for different audiences. As you grade students' assignments and tests, you'll also get them ready to take standardized tests issued by Louisiana. When students experience difficulty with science homework or classwork, you will directly assist them to boost their performance and help them succeed.

Education and Training Requirements

If you plan to teach science to students at any grade level, you'll need to start with a bachelor's degree in education. For preschool through third grade, you'll choose a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education, Grades PK-3. Grades 1-5 are covered in a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. Concentrations in science are required for higher levels; if you major in Middle School Education, which covers grades 4-8, you'll focus on general science. If you go with Secondary Education (grades 9-12), several concentrations are available, including general science, biology, chemistry, physics, and earth science. Along with your own studies, you'll complete a student teaching residency lasting one to two semesters where you get the chance to teach under supervision from a certified educator.

Exam Requirements

To begin, all teachers in Louisiana must take the Core Academic Skills for Educators exams in reading, writing, and mathematics. The age of your students will then determine the other exams you need to take.

Early childhood teachers will be covered through the Principles of Learning and Teaching: Early Childhood exam and the Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects exam. If you desire elementary education, you'll take Principles of Learning and Teaching: Grades K-6, and the Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects exam. Middle school educators need to take the Principles of Learning and Teaching: Grades 5-9 and Middle School Science exams. Secondary education teachers will take the Principles of Learning and Teaching: Grades 7-12 exam as well as pass a content exam in their subject; you can find these in biology, chemistry, general science, and physics.

Certification Requirements

Once you have completed your student teaching obligations, passed your exams and obtained your degree, you are eligible for teaching certification in Louisiana. You'll get your first certificate for five years. As long as you consistently teach for this five-year period, you can request your employing school district to renew it for an additional three years. If you have a 90-day gap or miss an academic semester of teaching, your certificate will lapse. At this point, you'll need to take six credits of continuing education to reinstate yourself as a certified teacher.
