Required Education

Art teaching candidates in Colorado will need at least a bachelor's degree in an Education related field as well as completion of an acceptable teacher preparation program. The teacher preparation program will include a student teaching assignment.

Required Praxis Examination

Aspiring art teachers must score a 158 or higher on the Praxis Art: Content and Analysis examination. Individuals will have two hours to take the test, which is comprised of 85 multiple-choice questions and 3 constructed response questions. The multiple-choice questions make up 75% of the overall score, with the constructed response questions making up 25% of the score. The examination certifies teachers for grades K-12.

Initial Teaching License and Renewal Requirements

Aspiring art teachers will need to submit their fingerprints for a national criminal history check through the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. The online application requires supporting documentation such as their official transcripts, an approved program verification form, and Praxis scores. Applicants will also need to include a five-year employment history and all teaching experience on their application. This license is renewable more than once if teachers do not meet the criteria to apply for the next level of licensure.

Professional Teaching License and Renewal Requirements

Art teachers will be able to apply for their professional teaching license once they complete a Colorado State Board of Education-approved induction program. Teachers will be assigned a mentor during their induction program and will receive ethics training and professional development training. The professional teaching license is renewable and requires 6 college credits or 90 clock hours of professional development activities. However, Colorado allows teachers to combine college credits and professional development activities, with 1 college credit equivalent to 15 clock hours and 1 continuing education credit equivalent to 10 clock hours. Teachers will not need to resubmit their fingerprints for a background check if they have maintained their active teaching certificate.

Master Teaching Certificate

Art teachers are eligible to apply for a master certificate once they obtain a National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Certificate. Teachers will need at least three years of relevant work experience in order to apply for Board certification. Those interested in becoming a Board-certified teacher are required to display superior methods, knowledge, and skills in their certification area by submitting three portfolio entries and passing a computer-administered exam.
