Step 1. Earn a Bachelor's Degree

All art teachers must hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited university, no matter if they plan to teach in an elementary school, middle school, or high school. Students should choose the applicable art field of study for their degrees, such as visual arts or art education. These degrees cover a range of methodologies, art theories, and practical art applications, ensuring that students receive training in many areas.

Ohio requires all aspiring teachers to complete an approved teacher preparation program. These programs focus on education courses and teach students lesson planning, classroom management, and other necessary subjects related to teaching. Students are also required to complete a student teaching assignment in local schools before applying for a license. Art education programs at state universities might offer the teacher preparation program in conjunction with the art major.

Step 2. Pass State Exams

Ohio requires art teachers to pass two exams: a content exam and a professional knowledge assessment.

The content exam requirement is met with the Ohio Assessments for Educators exam for Art. This computer-based exam lasts for three hours and costs $105 to take. It covers art tools, techniques, criticism, art history, and art foundations.

The professional assessment requirement typically depends upon what grade level the teacher is preparing to teach, but since art teachers can teach at any level, the appropriate exam is the OAE Assessment of Professional Knowledge: Multi-Age (PK-12). Like the content exam, this test is computer based and has a fee of $105. Topics on this test include student development, learning environment, instruction, and student assessment.

Additionally, some teacher preparation programs may require students to complete a basic skills test before completing their programs. In most cases, the Praxis CORE exam fulfills this requirement.

Step 3. Apply for Licensure

Once students have obtained their bachelor's degree, completed a teacher preparation program with a student teaching assignment, and passed all exams, he or she can submit an application for licensure. Applications are filed with the Department of Education and require renewal after five years.
