Required Education

The state of New Hampshire requires all teaching candidates to earn a minimum of a bachelor's degree in an approved teacher training program. Some programs may simply require additional coursework for dual certification, which may extend your undergraduate training. Dual certification might involve earning a master's degree in your desired areas of certifications. Your teacher training program may require you to complete a student teaching assignment for each area of certification. You could also choose to enter into a master's degree program that will allow you to earn your dual certifications.

General Required Test

All potential teaching candidates in New Hampshire must take the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators, which cover reading, writing, and math. You will need to earn the following qualifying scores: 156 in reading, 162 in writing, and 150 in math.

Subject-Specific Tests

You must also earn passing scores on the appropriate Praxis Licensure Area Test for the areas in which you wish to become dual certified. There is one test each for early childhood education and elementary education. The subject-specific tests for middle school education include the following: English language arts, math, science, and social studies. The secondary education tests include chemistry, Earth and space science, English language arts, life sciences, math, physical science, physics, and social studies. You can also become certified in the world languages of Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Latin, and Spanish, along with art, music, or physical education for all grades.

Teacher Certification Process

After earning your degree, you will need to apply for your Beginning Educator Certificate. This certificate is initially valid for three years after issuance. The next certificate you can earn is the one as Experienced Educator. You will qualify for this certificate after you have three years of full-time work experience and receive an effective performance rating for two years in a row. The Experienced Educator Certificate is good for three years. The certification process also includes passing a criminal background check.

Teacher Certification Renewal

You will need to complete continuing education credits throughout the three-year period your license is valid. New Hampshire mandates that you complete forty-five professional education continuing education credits and thirty continuing education credits in order to renew your certification. It should be noted that you must earn these continuing education credits for each of the areas in which you are certified.
