Adams State University

Adams State University's Master of Arts in School Counseling is available both on-campus or online with both programs following the same curriculum. The master's programs in school counseling require a total of 60 semester hours to be completed across a range of courses, covering more general counseling topics and theories, and more specifically 6 modules relating to in school counseling. An internship element is also required.

University of Colorado at Colorado Springs

At the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, students can enroll in a Master of Arts in Counseling with an emphasis in School Counseling, during which they are required to complete 60 semester hours in 2-3 years. This master's degree program includes six or seven 'Core Experience' courses which must be completed in sequence, following which, students will complete 100 hours of practicum and 600 hours of internship.

University of Colorado at Denver

Students choosing the Master of Arts in Counseling with a concentration in School Counseling at the University of Colorado at Denver will spend around 2 to 2.5 years completing relevant coursework in core common courses - in addition to more specific in school counseling. They will then complete around 12-16 months of internship and practical work, totaling around 63 semester hours.

University of Northern Colorado

The Master of Arts in School Counselling at the University of Northern Colorado requires students to complete around 63 credits in 20 required courses with a further 12 credits of elective courses. In addition to the coursework, students will be required to complete a 600-hour internship to provide valuable working experience.

Master's Degree in School Counseling: General Admittance Requirements

Although specific admittance requirements can vary from school to school, most commonly, students are required to already hold a bachelor's degree (in no specific field). In addition, they are often required to submit the following;

  • Reference letters

Group Counseling

The group counseling course explores group dynamics, leadership and group theory. Students may have a chance to participate as a group as well as a leader, giving valuable experience in both roles. They can explore group counseling theories and behaviors in many roles, styles, and settings.
