Program Information

A master's degree in school counseling, a minimum requirement to be a licensed school counselor in Utah, equips graduates to work in career development, individual and group counseling, behavior assessment and intervention, and other student concerns in K-12 settings. Candidates for a master's program need to pass the Praxis comprehensive exam in order to graduate. The coursework typically includes classes in developmental theory, psychometrics, and school program evaluation.

Developmental Psychology

A graduate course in developmental psychology looks into research and theory on the biological, cognitive, emotional, and moral aspects of human development. Students will examine theories of learning, personality development, and behavioral disorders and will learn techniques to encourage social and emotional development in academic settings. Discussions may also touch on psychotropic medications, risk factors, and warning signs of mental health issues, and the effects of stress and trauma on different individuals.

Psychological Measurement

A class on psychometrics focuses on the theories and tools of assessing aptitude, personality traits, interests, strengths, and neurocognitive functions. Students will learn relevant statistical concepts, the basics of standardized and non-standardized testing, and the use of symptom checklists and psychological testing. The course may also tackle ethical and culturally sensitive techniques in employing and interpreting test results.

School Counseling Overview

An introductory graduate course on school counseling will cover the history, philosophical foundations, and theories of counseling. Students will learn best practices in guidance and counseling interventions, and the proper analysis and use of data. Other topics may include mitigation of systemic dropouts and adoption of strategies to ensure equity in college access.

Career Development

Essential for licensure as a professional school counselor, a career development course connects development theory to feasible counseling interventions and presents an overview of models of career growth. The class will discuss strategies for program planning and implementation, skills development, and assessment of variables pertinent to career growth. After completing the course, students are expected to understand the links among work, mental health, relationships and other factors. Students will also be able to identify and utilize relevant resources, technology, and systems for career planning.

Multicultural Counseling

A course on diversity issues in counseling educates students on cultural identity development, pluralistic traits among diverse populations, structural barriers that hinder access and equity, and social justice. The class will also train students to be aware of their own biases and privilege as they relate to people from different groups. Relevant topics for discussion may include race and ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation, disability, spirituality and religion, socioeconomic status, and intersectionality.

Common Admission Requirements

School counseling graduate programs often evaluate applicants based on overall GPA, GRE scores, letters of recommendation, academic achievements, and relevant professional or volunteer experience. While not a prerequisite, a bachelor's degree in education, psychology, or sociology would be helpful. Some programs require students to take preparatory classes in psychology and statistics before starting the graduate coursework. Experience working with children and adolescents in a school setting may also provide a competitive advantage in the application process.
