How to Get a Master's Degree in Speech-Language Pathology

While some programs allow students to apply with a bachelor's degree in an unrelated discipline (and spend 1-2 semesters taking prerequisite classes), most schools require a bachelor's degree in communication disorders or pre-speech pathology. Student's apply with their undergraduate transcripts, a GPA of 3.0 or higher, GRE test scores, and 1-3 letters of recommendation from undergraduate professors. Students take courses in:

Anatomy and Physiology of Speech Mechanisms

In this class students study the biological processes behind the production of sound. Students study the anatomy of the supraglottal airway system as well as other systems used in speech production. They study how different physiological systems, like the nervous system, affect a human's use of sound.

Language Acquisition

In this class students study the normal language acquisition process in children as well as the second-language acquisition process. They examine language acquisition processes from a biological and linguistic perspective. Students learn how the language acquisition process affects and is affected by a child's social, cognitive, and motor development.

Communication disorders

In these classes students study different types of language, speech, and communication disorders. Students stay up to date with the latest research. They also learn how to evaluate clients and diagnose and treat patients.

Phonetics

Phonetics is the study of sounds in human speech. Students learn to become fluent using the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet). They also practice reading spectrograms and using the latest speech analysis technology (Praat).

Research in Speech Pathology

In this course students learn the skills needed to conduct original research in speech pathology. They study applied statistics and research best-practices. Students put their new knowledge to use creating a mock research proposal.

Speech Pathology Clinicals

Nearly every speech-pathology program requires students to spend a semester working in a clinical setting. Students may be placed in a research facility at their university or in a nearby clinic or hospital. This clinical practicum prepares graduates to be licensed speech pathology professionals upon graduation.
