Master's of Social Work Programs in Minnesota
Several schools in Minnesota offer MSW programs which enable students with any bachelor's degree to earn a Master of Social Work. Students who have a BSN can earn their MSW in as little as one year.
Students who pursue a Master of Social Work at Augsburg University are classified as foundation (non-BSW graduates) or advanced standing (BSW graduates). Foundation students can complete the MSW program in as few as two years while advanced standing students can finish in as little as one year. The foundation component consists of 34 credit hours and the MSW component (all students) can be concentrated in multicultural clinical practice (MCCP, 31 credit hours) or multicultural macro practice (MCMP, 30 credit hours).
Minnesota State University - Mankato
Minnesota State University - Mankato has two Master of Social Work programs available: Traditional MSW for students with a bachelor's degree in a field outside of social work, and Advanced Standing MSW for students who have a Bachelor of Social Work; both programs have an advanced generalist concentration. The Traditional MSW program consists of 59 credit hours including 20 hours of field practicum and the Advanced Standing MSW program consists of 34 credit hours, which includes 10 hours of field practice.
Saint Cloud State University
Students who have earned a BSW within the last seven years can earn a Master of Social Work through Saint Cloud State University's Advanced Standing program (32 credit hours). Students who have an older BSW or another bachelor's degree can earn an MSW by completing 59 credit hours in the Foundation program. Graduates of both programs learn to collaborate and work effectively through the advanced generalist program.
St. Catherine University
St Catherine University has a Master of Social Work program that develops critical thinking and intervention methods, preparing graduates for licensure as clinical social workers. The program can be completed in one to three years and consists of 38 or 56 credit hours, depending on students' undergraduate degree major; a dual degree in holistic health studies is also available.
University of Minnesota - Duluth
At University of Minnesota - Duluth, students can earn a Master of Science through either the Generalist program (non-BSW students) or the Advanced Generalist program (BSW students). Generalists complete 51 credit hours over two or more years while advanced generalists complete at least 34 credit hours over one or more years. Both programs have fieldwork components (900 hours for Generalist and 480 hours for Advanced Generalist), and students in the advanced generalist program who are interested in working with children can apply to the Child Welfare Scholars program (available for public and/or tribal childcare).
University of Minnesota - Twin Cities
Students can earn a Master of Social Work via full-time or part-time study through the MSW program at University of Minnesota - Twin Cities. The program consists of 34 credit hours for qualifying BSW students and 53 credit hours for full-program students, and can be concentrated in community practice, clinical mental health, families & children, or health, disability, & aging.
University of St. Thomas
University of St. Thomas has a hybrid Master of Social Work program that can be completed in as few as one or two years. Students with a BSW are considered advanced standing and are required to complete 38 credit hours of coursework, and students without a BSW must complete 56 credit hours. All students complete field practicum components, customize their learning experience with electives and fieldwork and can apply for one of three Area Emphasis Scholar programs: Military Practice, Aging, or Immigrants & Refugees.

Students can earn a Master of Social Work at one of many schools in Minnesota in as few as one or two years. Students who have a degree outside of social work will complete additional foundation courses, while students who have a Bachelor of Social Work can take an accelerated route to earn a Master of Social Work.
