Michigan Alternative Teacher Certification Programs

Those wanting to become a teacher in the state of Michigan can do so through an alternative teacher certification program. Learn more about this program, the requirements for entry, and which schools in Michigan offer it.

The alternative teacher certification programs that are offered in the state of Michigan are for select individuals who want to either transition into teaching from a different career, or move into teaching after earning either a bachelor's degree or a master's degree. The alternative teacher certification program must be completed within a period of five years.

Is There an Alternative Route Available for Becoming a Certified Teacher in the State of Michigan?

People in the state of Michigan can work to become a certified teacher through the Michigan Alternative Route to Interim Teacher Certification program. This program was made possible when it was passed by Michigan legislature in December of the year 2009. This alternative certification program is for individuals that either want to, or currently are, teaching at a public school in the state of Michigan and want to advance their standing by earning a professional teaching certificate. Alternative teacher certification programs must include a minimum of 12 semester credit hours of coursework and training in a number of different areas including family and community relationships, child development or child psychology, instructional strategies, diverse learners, and a field based learning experience that will take place in a classroom setting.

What Are the Requirements For Entering an Alternative Certification Program for Teaching in the State of Michigan?

The first requirement for someone wishing to enter into an alternative teacher certification program in Michigan is to hold a minimum of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Applicants must also currently be teaching with a Interim Teaching Certificate (ITC). Those entering into one of these programs will need to have a GPA of a minimum of a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, as well as pass the necessary Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC). Lastly, it is required that all candidates hold a CPR and First Aid certification and also be able to complete and pass a criminal background check.

What Is an Interim Teaching Certificate (ITC)?

An Interim Teaching Certificate is a type of certificate that is issues by the state of Michigan allowing the person who has it to teach at full-time status in a Michigan school. This certificate lasts for a duration of 5 years from the date that it is issued, and it expires on June 30th of the expiration year. This type of certificate can only be issued one time, and it cannot be renewed under any circumstances. In addition, once the certificate is issued to someone, no endorsements can be added to it. To be able to keep this certificate valid, teachers will need to be enrolled in an alternative route teacher preparation program.
