MPA Programs Without a GRE Requirement

Don't let the GRE test stop you from applying to a Master of Public Administration program. There is a variety of universities that do not require GRE test scores on the application (or waive the GRE requirement for students with a high GPA). Schools offering Public Administration degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

Comparing Master of Public Administration Degree Programs with no GRE Requirement

Master of Public Administration

A Masters of Public Administration prepares graduates to be change-makers and policy experts. Students spend 1-2 years engaged in discussion and analysis of complex economic, political and global issues. Oftentimes, students finish their program with a capstone project to improve outcomes for a non-profit, business or government organization. Admitted students can choose from a range of concentrations like urban development, nonprofit management, local government management, environmental policy, or human resource management. While some MPA programs will require applicants to send in GRE test scores, there are accredited universities that make the GRE optional or waive the requirement for students with professional experience and/or a high GPA.

Master of Public Administration (online)

Online Master of Public Administration programs can meet the needs of busy mid-career professionals as well as students about to begin their careers; they can sometimes be completed part-time. Some universities prefer to look at applicants' portfolios and statements of purpose, rather than standardized test scores. Thus these programs do not require applicants to send in GRE test scores. Some top-rated schools waive their GRE requirement for students who have 5 years of relevant work experience or a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Most online MPA programs can be completed in 24 months or less. Students can tailor their studies based on their interests and prepare for work in the public, nonprofit, or private sectors.

Joint MPA and Juris Doctor

If you are interested in the interaction between policy, government administration and the law, you may want to consider a joint Juris Doctor (JD) and Master of Public Administration degree. By completing these two programs concurrently, students can finish both degrees in 4 years (rather than the 5 years it would take to complete each program on its own). Another added benefit of the joint program is that some universities accept LSAT score in place of the GRE score.

Master of Public Affairs

A Master of Public Affairs (MPA or MPAff) differs slightly from an MPA in that the MPAff focuses more on big-picture policy while the MPA includes more employee management and administration classes. MPAff concentrations options may include public policy, energy policy, health policy, environmental policy and natural resource management, nonprofit management, community and economic development, international development, policy analysis, and sustainable development. Often students complete a capstone project and/or an internship as part of their program.

Master of Public Policy

Another degree similar to the MPA is the Master of Public Policy. While MPA degrees focus on administration, the MPP program zeroes in on policy analysis. Thus the coursework may include more economics and data analysis classes. Available concentrations may include global policy, social policy, economic policy, education policy, transportation policy, and environmental policy. If you enjoy the analytic side of policy change, there is a variety of MPP programs that do not require students to send in GRE test scores.

Getting Into an MPA Program without GRE Scores

Most programs require students to fill out an online application, submit their bachelor's degree transcripts, resume, writing samples, and three letters of recommendation (from former employers or professors). In addition, students must write a statement of purpose essay to convey their relevant experience, passion for the field and career goals. International students must submit TOEFL or IELTS scores to demonstrate proficiency in English.

If you want to learn how to make change in the world by writing and analyzing policy and managing public and private organizations, an MPA program may be the perfect way for you to develop the skills you need to succeed. Do not let the fear of the GRE test hold you back from pursuing your goals. Many respected universities do not require applicants to send in GRE test scores.
