Duke University

The Master of Science in Nursing at Duke University is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education and will take students two to three years to complete. All students are required to take 11 credit hours of clinical courses and students can add specialty certificates to their programs in the areas of cardiology, oncology, pediatrics, or veterans' health care.

Queen's University

The Master of Science in Nursing at Queen's University can be completed in two years, though it may take students longer depending on the number of classes that they choose to take per semester. Students that want to gain admission to Queen's University for an MSN program will not have to take the GRE exam or pay an application fee, but they will need to have a bachelor's degree in nursing prior to applying.

University of North Carolina

The University of North Carolina has a Master of Science in Nursing that is research-intensive and should take students at least two years to complete. Students at the University of North Carolina can enter one of the programs with either a bachelor's degree or as a registered nurse with an associate's degree. Students in the RN to MSN in healthcare leadership program will complete their classes solely online.

Western Carolina University

Western Carolina University has an MS(N) Family Nurse Practitioner that is a full-time program that requires students to take 52 semester hours of coursework along with 640 clinical hours of work, which can take students three to four years to complete. Courses in this program are taught both on-campus and online for the convenience of students.

East Carolina University

Students at East Carolina University can pursue an MSN degree in one of many different tracks, including adult gerontology, nursing education, neonatal nurse practitioner, nurse anesthesia, nursing leadership, and more. East Carolina University also offers a post-master's certificate for nurses as well. Students enrolled at full-time status can graduate in as little as two years, though part-time students typically need three and a half years to complete the program.

Gardner-Webb University

Students hoping to gain admission to Gardner-Webb University for a Master of Science in Nursing will need to already have a bachelor's degree in nursing from an accredited school and hold a minimum GPA of 2.7 in their undergraduate coursework, and this program should take students at least a year to complete. The MSN program at Gardner-Webb University is offered in an online format for students and requires students to take between 30 and 36 credit hours of classes.

Winston Salem State University

Winston Salem State University is considered to be one of the top ten nursing schools in the eastern United States and offers MSN programs in two different tracks. These tracks are the family nurse practitioner track and the advanced nurse educator track, and students can complete these programs in two years at full-time status or three years at part-time status.

How To Earn An MSN Degree

Earning a Master of Science in Nursing can take between two and four years to complete, depending on the enrollment status of the students. Some of the core courses that students may take as a part of this program include advanced pharmacology, primary care of adults, and advanced pathophysiology.

Advanced Pharmacology

A class like advanced pharmacology will teach students about different drugs and their interactions, along with their effects on the human body. Some of the topics covered in this course include pharmacokinetics, pharmacotherapeutics, and application to advanced nursing practices. This course may also cover common health problems that patients may have along with chronic illnesses.

Primary Care of Adults

A primary care of adults course will prepare students to work with older adults and manage their health and illnesses that may arise. This class will most likely put an emphasis on advanced nursing practices and the management of health care concerns in adults. Students in this class will also learn about health care and problems that may occur in underprivileged or disadvantaged communities.

Advanced Pathophysiology

This course will teach students about different physiological topics like cell function and genetics. Some of the topics that may be discussed in this course may include acid-base balance, the maintenance of vital functions, and neuro-endocrine-immune responses. In addition, students may learn about the different pathophysiological responses to changes in the environment.
